Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland
Anyone who is familiar with the Generator Rex series knows what nanites mean. Generator Rex is a cartoon series that was created by Man of Action and debuted on Cartoon Network. The plot of the show was new and fresh as it showed a world in which people had begun to mutate into different creatures, some good, and some bad. The popularity of the cartoon series lead to the creators of the show, create action figures as well as games based on the series. The game “Generator Rex: Agent of Providence” lets the player control the teenaged protagonist of the series, Generator Rex as he fights the mutated beings called EVO’s and is an agent of the firm named Providence. The game was released in November of 2011 and is available on different consoles such as the Xbox 360 as well as NDS, to name a few.
The plot of this game is quite interesting and is based on the cartoon series. The player takes control of Generator Rex, a teenaged agent of Providence, as he goes on a mission to defeat an EVO by the name Multi-Head and discovers a piece of some blueprint that then gets stolen by the character Breach. The story then makes Generator Rex lose some of his new builds or abilities. Thus, an adventure starts that allows the player to go along on a journey with Generator Rex as the player tries to find different pieces of the blueprint. This takes the player to different locations and different countries. The game has a lot of stages that are set in different areas. Players are able to enjoy this adventure in a jungle, in deserts as well as a metropolitan city. These locales have been taken from the cartoon series and players who know about the series are able to recognize these areas easily.
Along the way to find the blueprints that tell about the plan of the game’s antagonist named Van Kleiss who is also the main antagonist in the cartoon series, players have to defeat various supporting villains that have been featured in the cartoon series as well. This game features other cartoon series characters as well such as Generator Rex’s brother, Agent Six and Dr. Holiday. The game play is fast and the player has to defeat a number of minions that they encounter as the story progresses. After every level, they have to defeat a main boss in order for them to advance to the next level. Agent Six also assigns different missions to the players throughout the game and there are side-missions present as well that enables players to increase the game-play and enjoy the challenges that these missions present. Various collectibles are also present and the player can find and give them to Dr. Holiday as samples.
As the game progresses, players are able to obtain seven different builds or abilities for Generator Rex. These builds are fan favorites and have also been featured in the cartoon series. Some of these builds or abilities include the Smackhands, Big Fat Sword, Slam Canon, Punk Busters, Whip Arm, Axe Hands as well as the Funchucks. Players are able to use any of these abilities at any time while playing the game, once they are able to obtain them. Different builds have different damage points and are to be used in different ways when fighting an enemy. This makes the player think about which ability they should use when fighting with the enemies that are featured in the game. There is also a “Rex Level” in which one of the main characters from the cartoon series, Bobo Haha serves as a partner to Generator Rex and he has his own abilities that helps the player pass the level.
The best thing about this game, “Generator Rex: Agent of Providence” is that it stays true to the story and the plots that are discussed in the cartoon series. The characters have been portrayed in the same manner as in the cartoon series and retain their same personalities. The plot of the game is also something the developers should be proud of and it provides a unique experience to the players as they are taken into Generator Rex’s world. The story has the same plot seen in many other games but the way it has been presented to the players, is in a new way. The plot is about Van Kleiss planning to build the “Omega One” Nanaite that will enable him to attain God like powers. The players are on a mission to stop him before his plan succeeds and thus, goes on a journey that takes the player through a jungle, a desert as well as the city of Hong Kong and Ohio. The story as well as the gameplay keeps the players playing for hours as the game is fast paced, without unnecessary repetitions of levels along and has an interesting story.
